What are DBCIs? The term DBCI is shorthand for digital behavior change interventions, where a product or service uses computer digital technology to promote behavior change. The behavioral interventions are firmly grounded in behavioral theory and are designed and delivered to the patient in a digital format. It includes computer programs, websites, mobile applications (apps), wearable devices, body sensors, environmental sensors, and telecommunications. DBCIs in healthcare are a subset of digital healthcare interventions otherwise known as ‘e-health’.

A growing body of evidence is emerging showing that interventions, both digital and non-digital, developed with explicit theoretical underpinning are more successful than those which have been developed without the presence of theory to guide their development.
