Defining a Clear Digital Health Strategy to Support the Launch of Innovative Therapies

A Case Study in Cardiometabolic Disease

A global pharmaceutical leader introducing a novel therapeutic solution engaged S3 Connected Health to formulate a digital health strategy to support market entry, patient adoption, and adherence to enable long-term improved healthcare outcomes.

This project was managed by our consultancy team, a multidisciplinary team of experts who specialize in understanding and navigating the challenges that pharma companies face when developing and launching digital health solutions and articulating a robust digital health strategy. Through collaboration, our team devised an effective digital health strategy with strong business impact potential and a compelling value proposition to HCPs and patients for market adoption and scaling.

Overcoming Pharma Industry Challenges with Digital Health Strategies

Pharma companies often encounter market challenges when launching new innovative therapies that can be effectively tackled by implementing well-designed digital health solutions. These challenges are prevalent across the industry and include:

  • The need to distinguish their offerings from competitors by addressing unique disease challenges and providing compelling value propositions to healthcare providers and patients alike.

  • The need to support adherence to prescribed treatment regimes, particularly where there is a long interval cycle and non-adherence cadence, could be difficult to trend quickly.

  • A requirement for a comprehensive strategy for patient activation, engagement, and access that ensures the right patients receive the most appropriate treatments at the optimal time.

To address these challenges and drive successful outcomes, a comprehensive digital health strategy must be developed with all stakeholders in mind, and which has internal endorsement and senior sponsorship right from the start. Presenting a clear business case that aligns the digital strategy with corporate objectives will ensure stakeholder alignment and commitment to success.

Our Approach

The primary focus of this work is to align business objectives with patient and clinician needs and subsequently develop a robust approach to evidence-based, user-centric digital health solutions that deliver measurable impact to all stakeholders.  Leveraging our multidisciplinary approach and a flexible process that addresses the requirements of all stakeholders, from clients to end-users, a clear roadmap for development and market launch can be established.

Our process for this client followed 2 main tracks and covered 4 key areas:

Stakeholder engagement

Stakeholder Engagement Track

This focuses on business goals, challenges in patient and healthcare provider access, and market analysis within the disease and therapeutic area. It is important to not only align to business needs/goals but define measurable impact for the proposed strategy.
User centric round

User-Centric Design Track

This focuses on identifying and developing solution prototypes for treatment and disease management challenges. We use our proprietary behavioral design frameworks and direct stakeholder engagement to gather and prioritize user needs.

In addition to the roadmap, we designed a robust technical solution architecture to ensure that the solution set met all stakeholder requirements and functioned seamlessly within the existing healthcare ecosystem. This architecture served as a blueprint for the development team, guiding the creation of a scalable, secure, and user-friendly digital health solution that could effectively address the needs of all stakeholders.

Finally, to ensure a smooth transition from concept to reality, we developed a comprehensive implementation plan. This plan outlined the necessary resources, timelines, and responsibilities for each stage of the product launch, providing a clear path forward for the organization. It also identified potential risks and challenges that could arise during the launch process, along with proactive mitigation strategies to address them.

By completing these critical steps in the Specify stage, S3 Connected Health provided the organization with a thorough understanding of the digital health solution's value proposition, technical feasibility, and go-to-market strategy. The combination of the Target Service Profile, solution roadmap, technical solution architecture, product prototypes, and implementation plan equipped the organization with the necessary tools and information to make a confident investment decision and successfully bring the digital health strategy to life.

The Outcome

Following this process, we developed a comprehensive digital health strategy, consisting of several digital health solutions designed to address prioritized areas of challenges along the patient journey.

We addressed our client's key challenges in the following way:
